oh my god, GOOD CITRUS, where have you been all winter?
Sooooooooooooo I guess you could say I caught up with BSG in a sickly short amount of time. I... have been up till like four am three times this week, ick. Yay three hours of sleep? (Shut up.)
SEASONS ONE AND TWO WERE PRETTY AWESOME. Season three was kind of lackluster though? It was like... they all the sudden didn't know what they were going with everything. Especially Gaius, OH LORD, Gaius-- in the beginning he and his Head Six were hilaaaaaarious but it's like now he's the writer's personal Ken Doll who wanders around with Cylon Barbie (I had to make that joke, IT WAS TOO EASY) getting various titles thrown at him (Gaius Baltar: cylon??????, Gaius Baltar: MAN OF THE PEOPLE, Gaius Baltar: martyr!, Gaius Baltar: messiah with the fucking beard to match), I mean, wasn't the political stuff enough of a deviation from his ~brilliant~ scientific mind? He's floundering into Gary Stu territory, although... he has flaws, so maybe not. But seriously, who is this guy sleeping with to keep getting this much screentime for such useless plotlines?? I know he's a main castmember but egads.
Alsooooooooooo, there was too much Cylon stuff starting in season 3. Which feels weird to say, because I am a total Cylon apologist. Sharon and Six are my favorites! I enjoy most of the other Cylons too (not D'Anna, though, D'ANNA GOT LAME)! I get cranky when people say "frakking toasters" or are overtly racist towards cylons even though they almost have a right to be upset given that... the human race was pretty much annihilated. HA. And that "meanwhile, back on Caprica" episode with Boomer and Caprica Six at the end of season two was easily my FAVORITE. But...... the cylons wandering around being weird to classical music in their little disco ball ship is just so... lame? AND BOOMER. Ugh, she could have been so INTERESTING but she went from angry and in denial in "meanwhile back on Caprica" to ~let's occupy the human planet~. Um... okay. I mean I'm glad she's found her place among the Cylons since she obviously did not have one among the humans, but it's like they bring her out for shock value now. Sir... that one's Boomer. Boomer has voted against her model! I... don't know. I think they could have pulled off the New Caprica occupation a lot better in general if they hadn't ~shown the Cylons' motivations~.
At the same time though I like the Cylon civil war stuff and the new potential alliance (ALTHOUGH OKAY, what the hell did Roslin think she was going to gain from breaking the terms of the alliance and taking D'Anna for herself???? You lie to your allies and then... who knows how they react? Aren't you... kind of at their mercy when you're on their baseship?) and none of that could have happened if they hadn't had the weird ~cylon ship~ stuff so... yeah. I think it's just a case of season 4 > season 3. Whaaaaaaatever.
Ha so like I said Sharon is my favorite! I think it's already clear that I was crazy overinvested in Boomer but OHMYGOD ATHENA, I LOVE HER EVEN MORE. She's just so fiercely protective of their little... Agathon unit, and there's this vulnerability and sadness and ugh she is SO GOOD, why isn't there more of her? And Heloooooooooooooo, I don't think I've ever had a character before where I have to grin like, EVERY TIME THEY ARE ONSCREEN, but Helo brings that out in me. He just! I don't even think I can articulate my love for him. His face! His sense of justice! His everything! WHY ARE YOU SO GREAT, KARL AGATHON. I confess though: my love for them kind of gets in the way of enjoying other characters because EVERYONE WAS AWFUL TO THEM. And of course that's part of their struggle and why they are so lovely (they're just so happy after... everything!!!) buuuuuuut ugh, the way Roslin showed little to no remorse for faking Hera's death (I mean wait, I can almost understand why she did that in the first place: because it WAS risky to let the Cylons know about Hera and that was the safest way THEN) made me want to hit things. Like... her, in my computer screen.
I love Six too, in like... every incarnation ever, especially Caprica Six. (SHUT UP SAM, IT'S NOT JUST BECAUSE SHE'S TALL BLONDE AND PRETTY). ALTHOUGH WHAT, Tigh is sleeping with her now and she's pregnant? That's... so weird. Every time I'm reminded it's like "......oh". I mean I guess it has to do with the seeing-Ellen-in-her-face thing, but WHAT THE ACTUAL FUCK. Also Caprica Six! Her love for Gaius was such a big part of her characterization! And now :( I guess I do understand that the pregnancy itself was important because the cylons can now reproduce by simple procreation blah blah blah, and what other cylon had the authority to dismiss the guards for long enough to sex her up in her cell, but... WHAT THE FUCK OH MY GOD, TIGH? Also like... Caprica/Anders, maybe? Maybe???? I would've liked that better. Or wait, Anders and Tory were sleeping together, THEY could have had ~the baby~.
Ha, the final four were so... I don't know. It was almost anticlimatic! I think Tyrol was a bad choice, him secretly being a cylon all along undermines his character arc with Boomer. I mean it doesn't because he didn't know, but... it still kind of does. ALSO WASN'T IT STRANGE THAT ALL THE LEADERS OF THE RESISTANCE ON NEW CAPRICA WERE SECRETLY CYLONS??? I mean with two of them it wold have been funny, but ALL OF THEM? It's almost silly! I like Tigh as a cylon though (especially with Ellen! I... kind of love Tigh/Ellen? Is that weird? I wanted to kill her for a really long time but then I ended up really enjoying her right before she died) and I think Tory was a good choice too because they needed one of the four to be less... I don't know. Resistant to her cylon nature? Tied to her human loyalties? (Also ahahaha her killing Cally, god DAMN I hated that girl.)
I'M SO CURIOUS ABOUT WHERE THEY'RE GOING WITH THE FINAL FIVE, THOUGH, and this whole Earth and thirteenth tribe and two thousand years ago mess. And how they all got to the colonies and how those Cylons are mixed up with the other seven cylons? I actually think they're doing really well fixing a plot they kind of botched? Does that even make sense? For awhile it was like... oh. So I guess you're only showing us the cylon models we already knew about? Which is kind of ridiculous given then nature of ~occupation~? ...I mean, nice dramatic storytelling, but it doesn't make sense. ALSO, remember how Boomer knew there were eight other cylons hidden in the fleet? Yeah. So then in season three they were trying to fix the fact that only seven/twelve were... doing things, with that little D'Anna and Gaius and the ~search for the final five~ plotline and that was kind of yawny BUT SUDDENLY IT'S MAKING SENSE AND WORKING AND BEING AWESOME AGAIN WITH THIS CRAZY EARTH STUFF. Except for the Boomer bit (final five + D'Anna the reporter + priest dude + ????? = eight?), but whatever, I suppose we can disregard that. Maybe she was lying to save Chief because she really didn't know.
Ha, when they found desolated Earth I half thought they should just end the series with a Firefly crossover. We destroyed Earth, so we found a new system, and I guess you colonies refugees can come live with us here now! WOULD THAT NOT HAVE BEEN THE CRACKIEST, MOST HILARIOUS ENDING TO A TV SERIES EVER? I know, total flight of fantasy though.
Ummmmm, Lee and Kara? I don't know, I go back and forth on them like crazy. Sometimes they're like, delightfully fucked up and sometimes it's just like, god, WHO EVEN CARES (~you won't cheat, i won't divorce~, YOUR LIVES: SO HARD. OH THAT REMINDS ME THOUGH, Kara "your life: so hard"ing Lee was THE MOST WONDERFUL THING, I lol'd forever). Lee/Dee was like... almost interesting for a millisecond in the beginning when it was like "whoa, WHAT, where did that come from, I thought Dee's place was being adorable with Billy" (POOR, SWEET LITTLE BILLY) but after that it was just... torture. (You know I always do that! Like lame ships for half a second when they pop out of nowhere and are strangely intriguing -- I am thinking specifically of Wayne/Cheryl in Outrageous Fortune but no one is going to get that reference because neither
veils nor
missyahtzee watch BSG) When they went on a date in the midseason premiere it was very "GOD, NO, THIS SHIT WAS OVER" but then... she killed herself, HOLY CRAP? That was a craaaaaaazy good storytelling choice, it was so WTF in the best possible way. Although I kind of loved Dee a lot when she was not off being lame with Lee, so, um :( But yeah Lee and Kara! I... don't even know. The thought of actively shipping them now just... exhausts me. Maybe they will make a comeback though, time will tell. But remember how I was worried about Lee disappointing me? ...he did. SIGH, LEE, YOU WERE SO PRETTY AND HILARIOUSLY SELF-RIGHTEOUS IN THE BEGINNING and now you're mostly just lame unless you're running around the ship being badass with Kara. (THESE LAST TWO EPISODES WERE CRAZY INTENSE AND AWESOME, BY THE WAY.) OH, AND this Kara-is-dead-on-the-planet plotline is going to be delicious and awesome, I think, I AM CRAZY CURIOUS.
Anyway... that was a fun ride. I'm kind of glad I waited so long, actually, because I don't have to wait forever to figure everything out but I still get to participate in the end, I guess. Also um: I already asked
stop_theworld about this but I was too lazy to follow her advice: but is it actually worth going back and watching webisodes and Razor? It... seemed like they were not about things I would care too much about :/
