aaaaall the way

DANCE BREAK:

By my own rules I am not supposed to be Christmas-y until the day after Thanksgiving, BUT THEN GAP OUTDID THEMSELVES WITH THEIR 2008 ADS AND I HAD TO. HAD TO. (ALTHOUGH, okay, I'm also feeling oddly chatty and just felt like posting? HI!!) It is so many things I love about the holiday season: cute sweaters, dorky dancing, sooooongs, and glee. Also if you, like me, listened to this and thought "WHY DO I NOT HAVE AN AWESOME HIP HOPPY VERSION OF JINGLE BELLS ANYWHERE IN MY ITUNES???" there is a just plain Trey & Flo version, AND I WILL FIGURE OUT HOW TO RIP IT, SOMEHOW.

Tomorrow I am going to buy myself candles. Lots and lots of delicious smelling candles. Also sheet music. Except knowing my penchant for procrastination, I will still be saying this a week from now :(

P.S. FUN UNRELATED FACT: The Christmas classic "Baby, It's Cold Outside" originates from a crappy Esther Williams swimming movie from the 50s (I think it was the 50s?) that has NOTHING TO DO WITH THE HOLIDAYS AT ALL.

Nothing will ever beat the old school Gap commercials of the late '90s/early '00s (the West Side Story ones, OH MY GOD), but I love this one! I saw it a few days ago and was definitely smiling gleefully the whole time.

And the Trey Songz and Flo Rida one is WAY COOL, I agree. And I like that one girl with the funky hair in the argyle sweater.

Also, HELLLLLLLLLLLLLLO. Also, I am totally with you on no Christmas music 'til post-Thanksgiving. But sometimes I can't resist!

Oh I know! But they try every year and I love them for it. Still, people who complain about how annoying all the Christmas commercials are silly, I WILL SUFFER THROUGH THE SAME FERRERO ROCHER COMMERCIAL EVERY YEAR IF MEANS I GET THINGS LIKE THIS.

You mean Janelle MonĂ¡e! SHE IS FABULOUS, I love her voice.

But after Thanksgiving everything about ~the season~ sort of aligns and it's just SO MUCH BETTER THEN. I don't think you can be completely in the right mood before all the storefronts are decorated.

OH MY GOD. GAP. STOP BEING AMAZING IN EVERY WAY. I am staunchly opposed to getting Christmasy before the day after Thanksgiving, BUT NOW I HAVE TO MAKE AN EXCEPTION AND SEND THIS TO ALL MY FRIENDS AND POST IT ON MY FACEBOOK IMMEDIATELY. Howwwwwwwwwww are their commercials/ad campaigns always so amazing? HOW?

(ARGH, I'm seriously regretting deleting my Amy Poehler/Will Arnett icon from last year's holiday ads!)

WORD THE HARDCORE.

Hip-hop jingle bells is the bestest of the best. Better than indie holiday music.

In Canada our Thanksgiving is before Halloween, so stores have been Christmasing themselves out since November 1st over here. That does not make me love this Gap ad ANY LESS though, because I adooore all the GOOD christmasy things (remixed songs! ads like this one! etc!). AND I LOVE THAT HIP HOPPY VERSION SO MUCH.

[identity profile] thecolorbetween.livejournal.com 2008-11-17 03:38 am (UTC)(link)
They've had some good ones! The Claire Danes/Patrick Wilson one? Adorable. I mean, hello, it is Patrick Wilson. Dancing. (But Sandra Bernhard seems so random in this one. The part where Trey Songz and Flo Rida go, "I wanna wish you a happy Christmas."/"Merry?"/"Merry Christmas!" is just so happppppppy.)

I'll have to check out some of her other stuff. I do like her voice.

I miss being in NYC during the holiday season, right before all the tourists rush in. I mean, it gets Christmas-y here, but it's not the same.

[identity profile] elapses.livejournal.com 2008-11-17 03:43 am (UTC)(link)
THERE ARE FIVE MORE!!!!! IT'S LIKE A MINEFIELD OF CHRISTMAS DELIGHT. Even though it's only November 16th :/

I AM TOTALLY 100% IN AGREEMENT. It's like indie holiday music is 10 on a awesome scale of 1 to 10, but then hip-hop jingle bells busts some moves and steals an 11.

[identity profile] adinfinitum.livejournal.com 2008-11-17 03:47 am (UTC)(link)
I CAN'T STOP LISTENING TO IT!

[identity profile] elapses.livejournal.com 2008-11-17 03:51 am (UTC)(link)
Stores here do it too, I was on the outdoor mall here on election day and they were stringing the trees with holiday lights. But it always feels weirdly out of place until December. BUT STILL, it must be strange to live in a non-North American country where there is no Thanksgiving cue for when it is time to usher in the holiday season?

ME TOO, OH MY GOD. What was my life before hip hoppy jingle bells? I CANNOT RECALL.

[identity profile] elapses.livejournal.com 2008-11-17 03:58 am (UTC)(link)
I loved that Claire Danes/Patrick Wilson one (the Annie Get Your Gun song!) so much I went out and bought the pants. They're nice! And I agree, Sandra Bernhard doesn't fit-- in the individual commercials they pair her up with the Dixie Chicks and the joke is that they sing well and she doesn't, and it just comes off... awkward.

If you want I can upload an album for you?

OH, I BET YOU DO! It is actually one of my goals in life to witness the Christmas season in as many major cities as I can, but so far I just have London :(

[identity profile] elapses.livejournal.com 2008-11-17 04:00 am (UTC)(link)
ME TOO, THE FREQUENCY WITH WHICH I FEEL THE NEED TO PRESS PLAY IS IMPAIRING MY ABILITY TO DO ANYTHING ELSE? (SERIOUSLY, the only time I think I've ever been this excited about a single christmas song is the day I discovered S Club 7's "Perfect Christmas" in middle school.)

GAP CHRISTMAS ADS MAKE MY LIFE 100% MORE DELIGHTFUL.

[identity profile] elapses.livejournal.com 2008-11-17 04:32 am (UTC)(link)
YOU & ME & THE WHOLE WIDE WORLD, MY FRIEND.

[identity profile] goldenmelisande.livejournal.com 2008-11-17 04:34 am (UTC)(link)
I ESPECIALLY LIKE HOW THEY ALWAYS PUT ABOUT SIX OF THE PRINT ADS IN A ROW IN MAGAZINES, SO THE JOY IS PROLONGED. AND THEY ALWAYS FEATURE CELEBRITIES WITH THEIR CUTE CHILDREN.

[identity profile] heylabodega.livejournal.com 2008-11-17 04:39 am (UTC)(link)
OMG THANK YOU FOR PUTTING THIS OUT INTO THE UNIVERSE. I love Christmas so much, and like you I have the not-until-after-Thanksgiving rule, but that's only because I overdo it on Christmas cheer from the day after until December 25th, so if you think I won't be playing this a bazillion times, you're wrong. Also, I love the Gap and their ads and their stupid expensive adorable stripy scarves and sweaters.

For the record, when I post my holiday cheer to come post shortly in the future, I'm not copying you. Shut up. You were copying me. In the future. Or something. You see what Christmas does to my brain? All I was going to say was that this video rocks my socks.

[identity profile] dorasolo.livejournal.com 2008-11-17 04:53 am (UTC)(link)
ROMANY MALCO!!!!!! AND JASON BIGGS!!!! AND JON HEDER!!!! AND RAINN WILSON!!! AND FLO'RIDA!!!! WOOOOOOO ILU GAP.

Also they give me paychecks.

[identity profile] elapses.livejournal.com 2008-11-17 04:58 am (UTC)(link)
I instigated my not-until-after-Thanksgiving rule for the EXACT SAME REASON. AND YES, GAP. Every year I want every last one of their $60 sweaters, and almost every year I talk myself out of all of them and go to Old Navy instead :,(

THIS ALSO COUNTS AS MY PRE-EMPTIVE "omg u stole my poast!!!!!!" COMMENT.

[identity profile] elapses.livejournal.com 2008-11-17 05:11 am (UTC)(link)
SO MANY WONDERFUL PEOPLE ALL IN ONE PLAAAAAACE!!! Do you know Janelle Monae??? BECAUSE YOU SHOULD. Although it has actually just occured to me that I don't know a lot about your music taste.

Is Banana Republic the only Gap company that doesn't do jolly Christmas commercials, or do I have a selective memory?

[identity profile] dorasolo.livejournal.com 2008-11-17 05:16 am (UTC)(link)
BR doesn't have a TV campaign as far as I know, but I used to love the old skool Old Navy Performance Fleece jingles.

I have a fairly eclectic music taste, and I do know Janelle Monae, but not well. I sometimes download more than I can handle :) I'm kind of a music junkie in general.

[identity profile] thecolorbetween.livejournal.com 2008-11-17 05:19 am (UTC)(link)
Those pants looked nice! Sometimes Gap pants fit me realllly well (read: jeans, mostly) and sometimes they do not fit me well at allll (read: khakis, non-jeans, jeans). I think I saw all the individual commercials except the Sandra Bernhard/Dixie Chicks one. And was it me, or was Selma Blair very obviously not really singing in hers?

Oh, yes, that would be so great! I'd love to hear more of her.

I DO, I DO. And this year, we're going to Arizona right after Christmas through New Year's (EXTRA WEIRD, since we've been going over my spring break for...14 years), so I'll miss the holiday jingle jangle even more. You may only have London, but London is delightful and, umm, Love Actually-y, so I say, good on you!

[identity profile] thecolorbetween.livejournal.com 2008-11-17 05:22 am (UTC)(link)
Umm, I am going to have to find that S Club song. (Note I left off the 7. THAT SHOW ON ABC FAMILY, WAIT, WHEN IT WAS FOX FAMILY, WAS AMAZING. Please tell me you watched it.)

I think my favorite non-traditional Christmas song may be a tie between "Last Christmas" by Jimmy Eat World and "The Christmas Song" (OOOOOH MY GOD, I wish it weren't a Christmas song so I'd have an excuse to listen to it all the time). And aaaaah, I can't find it on iTunes, I think it disappeared!

[identity profile] elapses.livejournal.com 2008-11-17 05:29 am (UTC)(link)

Ha, I'm the exact same way. Sometimes there's just too much of the internet.

[identity profile] elapses.livejournal.com 2008-11-17 05:37 am (UTC)(link)
What childhood would be complete without ridiculous S Club 7 shows? OH MAN, a year or two ago I dug that up on youtube and spent a weekend rewatching, and THEY ARE STILL WONDERFUL.

Oh, I looooooove that Jimmy Eat World song SO VERY MUCH. My sister hates it, she spends the Christmas season telling me how terrible it is. My other favorite is Ron Sexsmith's "Maybe This Christmas".

ANYWAY:

[identity profile] thecolorbetween.livejournal.com 2008-11-17 05:42 am (UTC)(link)
I had a big crush on Jon. Was he the blond one? And Hannah was always my favorite. Speaking of which, LOLOLOLOLOL at those outfits. Oh, S Club 7. (WAIT, DO YOU KNOW STEPS? They were a four-person British pop group in the late '90s/early '00s, I think. I bought their album on a whim when I went to Williamsburg with my parents and looooooooved it. Very pop-y, very hilarious in retrospect.)

I love "Maybe This Christmas," too! That show always reminds me of The O.C.
