It's like, losing something that meant a lot to you and having to build up a whole new life, and maybe the new life isn't the same/isn't as good, but it's good in its own way? And the other person/persons have to be really understanding/gentle about it and not force anything. I never really connected the Sarah/Shaw thing either until I was trying to figure out how to phrase it and I realized that that's a big reason why I liked them/that au idea too.
