I did, at all of your heeding, go see the Star Trek movie last night. Verdict: AWESOME.

[livejournal.com profile] tinhooves said, "MAYBE PART OF THE REASON THE MOVIE WAS SO GREAT WAS BECAUSE NONE OF THE CHARACTERS ARE INSTANTLY REPULSIVE AND MOSTLY LOLDORABLE?" AND UH, I KIND OF AGREE. Suluuuuuuuuu! And his space sword! And the way he kinda saves the day with it after Kirk's "ooooookay fencing! HOW WEIRD IS THAT DUDE" face. AND MCCOY AND... EVERYTHING. AND UHURA AND HER PRETTY SWISHY PONYTAIL (that will hopefully be doing more than making out with Spock in the next... presumable movie? WHAT A BORING SHIP*). And Chekov and his babyface (it took almost as long for me to realize he was the dude from Charlie Bartlett as it took me to realize Kirk's mom was Cameron from House)!! And. yeah. They were maybe my favorites. But jesus, ALL OF THEM WERE SUPER WELL CAST. WTF WINONA RYDER THOUGH, loooool.

It took me like thirty minutes to realize the baddies were Romulans. I guess they... like tattoos. Or facepaint. (I was seriously in some kind of weird trekkie mode for the first 15ish minutes though-- partially because I thought it was SO LAME that they had to create NEW ALIENS--

UMMMMMMMMMM, the callbacks were really cute. I probably missed a zillion because basically everything I know about TOS comes from parody songs, Ultimate Trek, and the Trouble With Tribbles. BUT THE REDSHIRT!!! "You're out of your Vulcan mind!" aaaaaand Spock telling Kirk the exact probability that they were going to die. AWWWWWWW.

Also I HAVE READ SO MANY REACTION POSTS, and I have to say: OH MY GOD INTERNET, they were not going to a) create new female characters to even out the ratio (AS MUCH AS I WOULD LOVE THAT) or b) hire anyone white to play any of the various colored characters. I do not understand how any of this is even a discussion topic. THE GENDER + ETHNICITY + NAMES + OCCUPATIONS + BASICALLY EVERYTHING OF THE CAST WERE SET. J.J. Abrams isn't dumb enough to mess with that on his first go.

IN CONCLUSION, I can't decide if I think the AU thing is AWESOME/CLEVER or not. Dilemma.

*did you guys know the show was actually Kirk/Uhura? You... probably did. When I was twelve I saw Nichelle Nichols speak at a Trekkie convention and she was talking about how when they were going to do the big interracial kiss scene Spock/Uhura style, when William Shatner stepped in and said (as she told it) "I think I've anyone's going to kiss Nichelle--er, Uhura, it should be me--er, Kirk that kisses Nichelle--er, Uhura and not Leonard--er, Spock." AND THEY CHANGED IT. I remember thinking it was really weird that they could just... change that. Because you'd think that kind of thing would get set up. But I guess not in the 60s and not on Star Trek, AND THAT'S WHY THE MOVIE IS ALLOWED TO BE SPOCK/UHURA. Even though it is boring.

...not that Kirk/Uhura would have been better, because it would not have.

HEEEEEEEEEEEEE. I effing love that movie. "DAMNIT, I'M A DOCTOR NOT A PHYSICIST!" I didn't really like the original show... at all? I like the idea of it and all and I like a few episodes here and there but just overall it doesn't do anything for me. So... I didn't care when he changed that canon like he did, and made it all AU and what-not. I don't know how I'd feel about it if I HAD liked the original canon, but as it was I reallly really loved it. :)

And Chekov and his babyface (it took almost as long for me to realize he was the dude from Charlie Bartlett

He's Anton Yelchin, also the star from David Duchovny's House of D, if you ever saw that. ;)

I am fairly certain they are tattoos and not facepaint, looooool.

CHEKOOOOOOOOOV I AM GOING TO MARRY HIM, NOT EVEN KIDDING. WULCAN! EWACUATE! I CAN DO ZAT!!! I loooooove him.

Sulu's space sword was the most badass thing in the whole movie after a) THE ENTERPRISE SAVING THE DAY WITH SPACE LASERS (!!!) and b) Captain Pike shooting Romulans from AROUND Kirk WHILE HE IS INFECTED WITH THE PARALYSING DEATH WORM. I always want to say that I love Sulu and Chekov best but....I like Kirk and McCoy and Scotty and everybody, too! MY LIFE: SO HARD.

WHATEVER, FACEPAINT IS FUNNIER.

Just keep your hands off my Sulu >:(

NO OKAY, I... agree. I loved everyone! Which is fun because I never cared about... anyone on the Original Series. AND YET THEY'RE SO COOL NOW. WHAT HAPPENED?

I WANT TO TALK ABOUT IT WITH YOU TOOOOOO. We'll have to make some kind of AIM date? I use gchat so much now that I barely sign on, BUT I WILL FOR YOU!!

QUESTION THOUGH: did you think it was Year of Hellish? I saw that comparison somewhere and I kind of half see it but also kind of don't.

I think this might be the year to be a ~starfleet officer~ for Halloween.

AGREED! On the awesomeness, and 95% of what you said. Oh my god, Chekov IS Charlie Bartlett, huh! How 'bout that! Heeeere's the thing, I loved him in Charlie Bartlett but he landed just the wrong side of the cute/irritating line for me in this film? Oh well. BUT SULU WAS AWESOME. THEY ALL WERE. CHRIS PIIIIINE, BE MINE. Look I rhymed!

The ships are pretty boring but everyone is awesome so it makes up for that.

As a non-Trekkie, I was extremely proud of myself when I made the "beam me up, Scotty!" connection before they called him Scotty and had only mentioned him as Scott. I probably shouldn't be proud since this phrase has infiltrated popular culture roughly as much as "I can kill you with my brain" has, but nonetheless.

William Shatner is a crazy badass motherfucker.

ROUGHLY AS MUCH??? Idkkkkkk, I think "beam me up, Scotty" as a LOTTTTTT more cultural relevance as a catchphrase than "I can kill you with my brain". I MEAN I LOVE FIREFLY, but... I don't know non-Firefly fans who are aware of that phrase.

DAMN STRAIGHT.

I am rereading my comment and laughing at myself, because of course you are right. I guess I really mean my little corner of popular culture? In which Joss Whedon started subtly influencing the way I view pretty much every single thing in the universe before I even knew it?

Hahah I figured it was... something more personal, BECAUSE THAT WAS CRAZY TALK, and you are not one for crazy talk.
