Yes exactly! And I mean I do think there's some essential part of male-ness and female-ness that we all have if only because of socialization: it's doubtful that a girl and a boy with the exact same personality would have the same experience growing up because people would probably react to them differently? (For the same reason I think "colorblind" casting like they did for Grey's Anatomy is kind of weird: I mean on one level it's great, it just seems like people are... not defined by, but shaped by their race in some ways, so it's weird to create a character and then figure out their cultural background. But maybe not! I guess if you're writing a pilot you don't really get that deep into that stuff for the most part, and you can take all that into consideration later...) OKAY BUT YEAH, basically yes you can't completely do that, but it's not like women aren't ruled by revenge or greed or impulsiveness or whatever motivates your male characters? It's not that hard. But yes this: it's so frustrating how female characters are always, in some way or another, matching up with some negative stereotype while a male character is seen as being layered and complex. Because like, even though sometimes it is the writing, a lot of the time it's not really the writing, just the fact that almost everyone has this impulse to pick apart female characters looking for stereotypes.

I haven't even heard of it!! Thank you for pointing it out though, now I want to check it out.
