I really love your feelings about this, I love them so much I kind of wish I could feel them too! For me All Things is an almost uncomfortable experience, almost for the same reason - too much Gillian, and I don't really like to be too reminded of the actors that much. But I love your explanation - that is comes from GA's love fore Scully. That is an adorable idea.
Also we watched XF in kind of the same way - I mixed re-runs like a fiend, I got so eager I read transcripts of episodes online (before I had a fast enough connection to d/l) which meant I ended up watching episodes online for the first time that I'd already read (and sometimes I'd confuse them with fic and then I wouldn't understand what had and hadn't happened. Pretty easy to do, given the mytharc's inconsistencies). It was probably years before I filled in all the holes in my watching. Happy years!
